Red and blue lights flashed in the apartment parking lot as Denise DeWalt pulled in and watched officers lead a handcuffed man to a squad car. A police car parked at an angle across the driveway forced her to stop. “What’s going on?” she muttered. She considered backing up, but a red Jeep Cherokee pulled in behind and blocked her. She had driven up to her complex still feeling the endorphins from two hours of playing basketball, but that high disintegrated as events played out before her.

Laura looked out the bus window at the rain, which was growing worse every minute, said yet another silent prayer that all would be well. She finished the text message to her sister in California on her PDA/phone. She listened to the hum of women talking around her, and more specifically to the two women talking in the seats in front of her.

“And here’s one with my husband and baby.”

John tuned out the babbling of other Realtors that poured through his office door and focused on his computer screen. If things went well that evening, he would have to buy himself a celebratory present. The Baccarat Tornado Vase on the screen before him was exquisite, and worth every bit of the nearly $3,200 price. It’s a pity I’ll have to tell Lily I picked it up at a yard sale or something. She’s far too straight laced. Naiveté works for her, however. In this case, it will work for me, too. He whistled as he bookmarked the page for later.
